No fewer than 13 individuals lose their lives and 98 wounded in train derailment in the nation of Mexico.

A deadly train derailment in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive censure from critics regarding the speed and handling of the country's key government projects.

The crash took place on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a line built to join the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was designed to provide an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving commercial progress in the area.

“We will rigorously clarify the cause of this incident,” declared the country's president.

The official announced that, of the around 250 passengers on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in grave condition. The official added plans to go to Oaxaca to speak with those affected.

Major Initiative of Previous Administration

The Interoceanic Train was a central public works project of the former leader, whose time in office ended the previous year. This rail line was a hallmark of his administration's strategic vision for the southeastern region.

Another ambitious train initiative from that era, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the broader strategy to stimulate the economic fortunes of a relatively disadvantaged part of the country.

Project Execution and Risks Apprehensions

The development of both train projects was overseen by the armed forces, marking a significant increase of its role in national works. They were executed at an accelerated pace, defying predictions to be partially launched before the end of that presidency.

However, this rushed timetable had simultaneously raised significant questions over construction quality.

  • Sunday's accident was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train this year.
  • This involves an previous collision this month when a train hit a truck at a crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also experienced several non-fatal derailments.

Calls for Review and Suspension

In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the head of a primary political opposition urged an urgent halt in the building and running of all similar projects.

This stoppage was proposed until the completion of a thorough independent investigation. The party emphasized that the situation "calls for prompt explanations."

In reaction, the president maintained that the train had been functioning in total accordance with all operational standards. Assurances were given that the government would continue to be "accountable" in both the development and running of these strategic projects.
